Parkdale was founded in the 1850s within York County and was incorporated in 1879 as a village. In 1889 it amalgamated with the city of Toronto. Once the wealthiest district in Toronto, you will find many impressive historic mansions scattered throughout. Parkdale used to contain the Sunnyside Amusement Park but when the Gardiner Expressway was built in 1955, the Park was demolished to make way. With this boom of construction in the late 1950s, whole blocks of houses were demolished to make room for apartment buildings. Parkdale has a very diverse population, vibrant shopping and recent new developments have brought restaurants and bars to the area. The tree lined streets and victorian homes give Parkdale its charm and warm neighbourhood feel, while new condo buildings and loft and church conversions offer more housing options.
